Section 1
Gregor awakes to find himself transformed into a bug. He is worried that since he woke up late that
he will be late for work, so he thinks that maybe he could make the 7 a.m. train. Gregor struggles to get out of bed
in his new body. His parents become concerned that maybe there is something wrong with Gregor. He tries to assure
them that everything is fine even though they can't really understand his speech. The clerk chief from Gregor's work
comes to check on Gregor, and he reveals that he has some suspicions about Gregor participating in some illegal activities.
Gregor pleads with the clerk chief to not accuse him of those crimes, and finally opens his door. His mother faints,
the chief clerk runs away screaming, and his father hits him with his newspaper and puts him back in his room.
Section 2
Gregor awakes and tries to drink some milk, which is his favorite drink. He doesn't enjoy the milk
anymore since his new state does not have a preference for milk. His sister starts to bring Gregor garbage to eat since
this appeals to his taste better. Gregor overhears a conversation that his family has about money, and he is overcome
by shame at the thought that his sister could have to stop her violin studies at the conservatory if she has to start working
since he has stopped. His family decides that the best course of action to take is to remove the furniture from his
room and hope that he just leaves because he knows that he isn't wanted. As they remove one of Gregor's favorite pictures,
Gregor tries to cling onto it, but this scares his mother and sister. His father, in retaliation, starts to chase him
around the room, throwing apples at him, and one penetrates his back and causes excruciating pain for Gregor, and he passes
out.
Section 3
Gregor is barely able to move around now because of the incapacitating wound on his back. His whole
family is working now, and they decide to rent out Gregor's room to three lodgers. The lodgers ask Grete if she could
perform her violin for them, but when she starts to perform the lodgers soon become impatient with her. Gregor loves
her music, and starts to creep towards them. The lodgers see him and say that they will be leaving and not be paying
the rent. His family now loses all hope that the bug is still their Gregor, and they feel that if the bug was truly
their son, he would save them the torment of staying around. Gregor agrees with his family, sits in his room, and dies
that night. Finally free from Gregor, his family goes out of their apartment for the first time.
